Far Rockaway/Hempstead Harbor « Read Less
July 8th 2007 - Tony organized a car-top expedition to Far Rockaway. Original plan was Far Rockaway to Island Park; we cut it a little short because of predicted headwinds on the way back. Tony promised interesting birds, squatter's shacks & beautiful water - we got all that!
On the beach at Far Rockaway
So that's where we're sneaking out for an exploration of one end of Hempstead Harbor!
This is right at the Rockaway Inlet. The water's beautiful - amazingly clear, for a NYC beach. There used to be a scuba shop here for that reason - shut down now, slated for development.
The water is also beautifully cool - it's a hot day, mid-90's and humid, but once we're out on the water, we hardly notice it.
